Hilary Stewart-Jones, Partner, Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP

Hilary Stewart-JonesHilary heads a team of lawyers who all work full time advising the gaming sector, providing fully integrated multi jurisdictional advisory services to the gambling industry, which ranges from regulatory and licensing advice to contractual and compliance. She advises a broad range of clients from operators to banks and entities more peripherally associated with the industry.

Her team has worked on most of the significant floats of the online industry in the last six years including Cryptologic, NETeller, Gaming VC, Partygaming, 888.com, Excapsa, Playtech, and Leisure and Gaming and AsianLogic. She and her team also acted for Playtech on the William Hill joint venture, as well as for the vendors on the sale of Expekt.

She also works in close liaison with regulators from multiple jurisdictions. She has drafted legislation for three major offshore licensing jurisdictions and was involved in extensive lobbying before the new Gambling Act was passed in the UK. She was also instructed by two jurisdictions in relation to “white listing” application in the UK and co-ordinated on behalf of a number of clients the substantial new and grandfathering application processes under the Gambling Act.

She also has conducted a significant amount of regulatory and commercial work for Asian based businesses, including deals with Sino Strategic International, CY Foundation and AsianLogic, admitted to AIM in late 2007. With regard to European facing work, she has advised clients such as Gala Coral, SBObet, 188Bet, Betfred, Virgin and Sportingbet on issues such as restructuring and company location and numerous clients on the optimum licensing jurisdictions for their commercial needs, as well as the structural and compliance changes needed to secure such licensing. Most recently she advised on the related regulatory issues arising out of Sportingbet’s announced admission to the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.

Hilary continues to be recognised as a leading expert in the Legal 500 and Chambers, and was selected by The Lawyer as one of the “Hot 100” lawyers in the UK in 2007. In 2005 she was voted Lawyer of the Year by the World Online Gambling Law Report.
